The Department of Music at Princeton welcomes all students interested in studying music, whether as a performer, composer, or conductor, a scholar of music theory or music history. All interests, abilities, and aspirations find a home here. Students may choose from a wide variety of courses in Western and non-Western music history, music theory, composition, and music technology; take private lessons with accomplished professional musicians; and participate in any number of performing groups, from chamber ensembles to full orchestras and mixed choirs. The Department supports independent projects, senior theses, and student-initiated seminars—all of which add up to a rich musical life on campus.

Majoring in music might prepare you for a career in performance, composition, music education, or for graduate work in music history, ethnomusicology, or music theory. A significant percentage of music majors do not pursue professional careers in music at all but instead go into law, medicine, business, or some other profession. In truth, you can do anything, but majoring in music offers the opportunity to indulge your passions.
